What is the Sacrament of Marriage?
The Sacrament of Marriage is a sacred covenant by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of their whole life and which is ordered to the well-being of the spouses and to the procreation and upbringing of children. This covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.
"So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." - Matthew 19:6
The Essential Properties of Marriage
Unity
Marriage is between one man and one woman, forming an exclusive partnership for the whole of life.
Indissolubility
The marriage bond is permanent and cannot be dissolved except by the death of one of the spouses.
Fidelity
Spouses are called to mutual fidelity, love, and respect in their conjugal life.
Openness to Life
Marriage is oriented toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of children.
Preparation Process
Contact the Parish Office
Schedule a meeting with a priest at least 6 months before your desired wedding date. This allows adequate time for preparation.
Pre-Marriage Investigation
Meet with the priest to complete the required paperwork and determine freedom to marry in the Catholic Church.
Marriage Preparation Course
Attend the parish marriage preparation program which covers communication, finances, faith life, natural family planning, and more.
Submit Required Documents
Provide baptismal certificates, confirmation certificates, and other required documentation.
Wedding Rehearsal
Participate in a rehearsal to prepare for the ceremony, typically held the day before the wedding.
Wedding Ceremony
Celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage during Mass or in a separate ceremony as determined with the priest.
Required Documents:
- Recent baptismal certificates (issued within 6 months) for both parties
- Confirmation certificates
- Pre-nuptial inquiry forms
- Proof of attendance at marriage preparation program
- Civil marriage license (obtained from local government)
- Freedom to marry affidavits (if applicable)
- Annulment decree (if previously married)
Important Notes
- At least one party must be a registered member of St. Patrick's Parish
- Weddings are typically celebrated on Saturdays
- No weddings are scheduled during Lent
- The church must be reserved before making other wedding arrangements
- Both parties must be free to marry (never married or have a declaration of nullity)
